brad johnson here for americans for
00:02
intelligence reform
00:03
intel reform.org it is march 2nd 2021
00:08
a dangerous development now with al
00:10
qaeda
00:11
uh recently the the uh the the most
00:14
current leader of al qaeda was uh ayman
00:18
al-zawahiri
00:19
now he uh was always the number two uh
00:22
with
00:22
while bin laden osama bin laden was
00:24
there and ran the thing
00:26
and they were a fairly effective team
00:30
together they made kind of one good
00:32
leader
00:34
once osama bin laden was killed
00:37
it was like half the brain was gone and
00:39
ayman al-zahiri was there
00:41
and in charge known respected by the
00:44
al-qaeda guys
00:46
and maintained leadership but was never
00:49
what
00:50
he had been working in combination with
00:52
osama bin laden
00:54
now there are many reports out there
00:56
that he died of asthma on that there was
00:58
no treatment available for him because
00:59
he was out hiding
01:01
uh you know a lot of people were looking
01:02
for him so he was in hiding and and died
01:05
of asthma so
01:07
uh whatever the truth is there doesn’t
01:10
matter he’s
01:11
out of action and has now been a
01:14
replacement has now been named for him
01:16
uh whose nickname is the sword of
01:18
revenge now
01:20
normally i would take a look at a name
01:23
like that and not think much of it but
01:24
this guy is saif
01:26
al adel who has been around for
01:29
30 years fighting and was involved in a
01:31
lot of these operations
01:33
that al qaeda did and has lived
01:37
a very long time with that lifestyle
01:40
so he is a very dangerous man and he’s
01:43
come up through the ranks is
01:44
very experienced smart cagey
01:47
guy who knows how to do all of this
01:50
stuff
01:51
so we’re now observing and this is
01:53
something we did a separate report on
01:55
we’re seeing what looks like a possible
01:57
resurgence
01:59
just recently with a safe haven
02:02
for al qaeda in the in the azerbaijani
02:06
region
02:08
of nagorno-karabakh this was recently
02:11
taken back in that war with armenia
02:13
and this is something where turkey
02:16
is helping to to move these people in
02:19
there and they were the ones that
02:20
brought these fighters out of syria
02:22
into that region to help the azeri
02:24
forces beat back the armenian forces
02:27
backed by russia
02:28
so this is an interesting
02:31
move and like i said probably a very
02:34
sound one that region would be perfect
02:36
for this sort of thing
02:38
and uh this may be a reflection of this
02:40
new leadership who
02:41
if if this guy this sort of revenge
02:45
really is there in large and in charge
02:47
which i have no reason to doubt any of
02:49
that
02:50
i think this is all 100 dead on this
02:52
would be something that a guy like that
02:54
would recognize the value of because he
02:56
understands
02:57
what where you need to be what sort of
02:59
place would work
03:00
that gives you freedom of movement yet
03:02
freedom to operate and train
03:04
and have a an uninterrupted headquarters
03:06
there this is a guy that’s been hiding
03:08
in iran
03:10
and uh the people that talk about him
03:12
are
03:13
like using words like brilliant and
03:15
ruthless and all of that
03:16
all of that i take at face value this is
03:18
all true about this guy
03:20
he is a huge danger now
03:24
to the west in the united states of
03:26
america we are clearly
03:28
seeing al qaeda reform and re-energize
03:32
and they’re going to begin to grow when
03:35
they get into that position where they
03:36
have
03:37
uh well-respected and trusted leadership
03:40
that is what brings in
03:42
recruits and this guy is is known to be
03:47
ruthless i think that’s just the right
03:49
word to use with this guy over and over
03:52
he’s ruthless but that type of behavior
03:54
brings in recruits
03:55
they’re going to want to go to this guy
03:57
so we’re seeing a clear resurgence
04:00
in the capability of al qaeda it looks
04:03
like they’re getting
04:04
funding as well what is their
04:06
relationship with turkey that’s very
04:08
interesting and very dangerous if that’s
04:11
all true
04:12
out of that region of nagorno-karabakh
04:14
with these guys moving in now that’s
04:16
based on russian intelligence which
04:19
you’ve got to take with a grain of salt
04:22
but they do suffer from the same
04:23
problems they have not been any great
04:25
friends
04:26
of al qaeda’s so it’s one of those
04:28
reports you can look at
04:29
coming out of the russians and say well
04:31
okay this one there’s a there’s a solid
04:33
chance out there that this is true
04:36
if indeed all of this is true if the
04:38
sort of revenge is there he’s beginning
04:40
to form these training camps
04:42
and safe havens and places where he they
04:43
can stage operations
04:46
uh this is going to be a real danger
04:49
this will take
04:50
time to play out uh he can begin
04:52
bringing in recruits and training them
04:54
and getting them out and getting funding
04:56
and you know a year from now six months
04:58
from now we might start to see
05:00
some additional operations that are
05:02
al-qaeda oriented
05:03
and and as a growing threat over time
05:07
this is not something where we here in
05:10
the united states or in the west
05:12
are really looking terrorism has
05:15
basically been
05:16
eliminated as an area where we spend any
05:19
real
05:20
effort so it’s not something we’re going
05:22
after and
05:23
into that vacuum we’re going to see an
05:26
uh an al-qaeda resurgence we’re already
05:28
seeing the beginnings of it
05:30
they’ve effectively picked a a great
05:32
leader
05:33
from their perspective very dangerous to
05:36
us
05:36
and and we’re not doing anything about
05:39
it
05:40
this is once again where the
05:41
intelligence community of the united
05:43
states
05:44
has let us down drastically and these
05:47
political moves are going to get people
05:50
killed
05:51
this is how it begins here we are
05:53
looking at all of this putting it all
05:55
together
05:56
seeing clearly what’s a developing
05:58
problem and nothing is being done out of
06:00
the government yet
06:01
they know what’s going on they have to
06:03
so
06:04
they don’t care because there are other
06:06
political considerations now there
06:07
are other dangers out there in the world
06:10
certainly china is the greatest
06:11
long-term strategic threat to the united
06:13
states of america
06:14
there are some of our you know resources
06:17
being used against them and other
06:18
targets of that nature
06:20
but you cannot just drop trial when it
06:22
comes to stuff like terrorism
06:23
this is a real danger these guys are
06:26
going to go out and kill people
06:27
and the blame for that we have to to
06:30
accept some of the blame for
06:32
for that ourselves because we’re not
06:33
going to have to stop these guys right
06:35
now
06:35
nipping it in the bud when they’re still
06:37
small enough and disorganized enough
06:39
that you can wipe them out
06:40
once they grow to be a much larger
06:42
organization and more effective
06:43
it’s just that much tougher this is a
06:46
policy failure of the united
06:48
states and it’s going to get much worse
06:50
over the next four years this is going
06:51
to get people killed
06:53
this is a failure of the intelligence
06:54
community everybody always talks about
06:56
the words they use the words
06:58
talk talk truth to power this is talking
07:01
truth to power
07:02
what’s happening in the intelligence
07:04
community is they’re just shaking their
07:05
hands their bobble heads going yes yes
07:07
whatever you want us to go against
07:09
that’s what we’ll go against we don’t
07:10
you know we don’t care what’s true
07:12
we’re going to go up against what’s
07:14
politically expedient that’s a mistake
07:16
this is where talking truth to power
07:18
pays off
07:18
this is where the intelligence committee
07:20
should be standing up going wait a
07:21
minute
07:22
we need to throw resources at this
07:24
problem get me
07:26
get more resources however you have to
07:27
do it but this has to be addressed
07:29
because
07:30
this is dangerous and and will cause
07:32
people to die
07:33
so there we are that’s again this is
07:35
just one of the areas where reforms are
07:37
so badly needed here in the united
07:38
states and
07:39
and this is just a perfect example of
07:41
why
07:42
not going to happen anytime soon
