Repeatedly in 2023, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev predicted that Joe Biden’s senility could lead to World War 3. Since President Biden has taken office in January 2021, his age and perceived mental health has been questioned by political commentators, opponents, and now the former President of Russia has expressed his concerns.
The Cold War between Russia and the United States was defined by two superpowers clashing over ideology, armament and posturing for international power. The two great nations were, and still are, pitted against each other in a complex constitutional, economic and sociopolitical warfare that has one of the most significant effects on the current global climate to this day.
In Medvedev’s statement, he expressed distrust of the current American president and expressed his concerns that his “weakening of international law” and that Biden being senile could lead to World War 3 in the near future. Medvedev also noted that America’s weakening hold on the world’s two biggest economies (China and the European Union) is a sign that “alliances and unipolarity are being replaced by different, multipolar models”. With rising economic tensions between the U.S. and its historic allies in Europe, and between the U.S. and China, the opportunity for the escalation of conflict into it’s most extreme form (war), is increasing.
What is most concerning is the possibility of a superpower nuclear arms race between America, Russia and China. As each continues to build up its nuclear arsenal, the risk of a catastrophic global conflict increases with every launched missile.
Ultimately, it is difficult to determine the effects of Biden’s foreign policy on the world, both in the short and long term. Even if Biden’s progressive agenda does lead to a global nuclear arms race, the risk may still be much lower than it was when the Cold War was first fought. On the other hand, if Biden’s inexperience, lack of familiarity with foreign policy, and aging age do contribute to a global catastrophe, the result could be catastrophic for all parties involved. All we can do is hope for the best and hope that when Dmitry Medvedev claims that President Biden being senile could lead to World War 3 that he is very, very wrong.
