Coach Popovich has recently made statements regarding gun control that suggest his belief that stricter gun laws would save lives. However, this is simply not supported by evidence. In fact, studies have shown that there is no relationship between the strictness of gun laws and the number of firearm deaths and that gun control costs lives.
It is important to recognize that gun ownership is an inherent right, as guaranteed by the Constitution. Any attempt to curtail this right must be backed up by solid evidence that it will actually have an impact on reducing violence. Despite claims to the contrary, such evidence does not exist. Instead, we must focus on addressing the underlying issues that are driving violence in our society, such as mental health issues and poverty – factors which are far more strongly correlated with violence than gun ownership.
Furthermore, it is important to recognize that gun control measures are simply not effective at preventing criminals from obtaining firearms. Studies have shown that most guns used in crimes are obtained illegally, and that criminals generally do not obtain guns from legal sources. It is therefore unlikely that stricter gun laws would have any impact on crime rates or violent incidents. Since gun control laws are only followed by citizens who follow the law, it effectively disarms them in the face of criminals who are armed, prompting 2A supporters to argue that gun control costs lives.
Ultimately, the idea that gun control can save lives is a myth. It is a simplistic solution to a complex problem, and one that is not supported by the evidence. Instead of focusing on eroding our constitutional rights, we should be focusing on the underlying issues that are driving violence in our society, and work to address those in more meaningful ways. Only then will we be able to make meaningful progress toward reducing gun violence and improving public safety.
