Americans for Intelligence Reform

Brad Johnson, President, and retired CIA Senior Officer and Chief of Staff. Insight into current events from an intelligence angle.

France and Germany want Turkey out of NATO

Tired of Erdogan’s antics, France and Germany decided Turkey’s continued NATO membership liabilities outweigh assets. Erdogan’s meddling with Libya, Northern Syria, Northern Iraq, threats to dig resources in Greek waters and, most alarming to Western Europe, close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, seems the tipping point. Will the Sultan be taken down? Brad Johnson, CIA Chief of Station (ret.) weighs in.

another bit of very very rare but good
00:03
news is that of all the people that I
00:05
would least expect to want this France
00:07
and Germany want turkey kicked out of
00:10
NATO hard to believe it’s them what’s
00:14
the story on this yes excuse me it’s
00:17
very interesting a turn of events now as
00:19
you know we’ve done a lot a lot of
00:22
interviews I’ve done a lot of op eds and
00:23
a lot of interviews concerning Turkey
00:26
and for a very long time have been
00:28
pointing out how turkeys kind of gone
00:30
down this Ottoman Empire rabbit hole and
00:32
they’re clearly I mean there’s just it’s
00:34
conclusive that the president Erewhon
00:38
of Turkey is attempting to re-establish
00:41
the Ottoman Empire and we abused himself
00:45
as the grand Sultan of of this new
00:47
Ottoman Empire and has ambitions to take
00:50
back over all areas of the earth that
00:54
were previously conquered by the Ottoman
00:55
Empire and we’ve seen that aggression
00:58
playing out in places we’ve mentioned
01:01
all of this previously but just quickly
01:03
I mean places like Libya where he’s
01:06
backing the government there and is
01:07
essentially attempting to make a puppet
01:09
government out of that he’s working in
01:12
northern Syria and his you know
01:15
essentially his militia troops are
01:17
fighting Syrian government troops and
01:19
attempting to take control there he’s
01:21
going to probably drill in Greek waters
01:25
trying to take the research capture the
01:27
resources there and this probably will
01:30
create conflict there and he’s been
01:33
fighting in northern Iraq against the
01:35
Turkish troops there at very aggressive
01:38
just very expansionist which is all you
01:40
know for him a straight up forward thing
01:42
because all of these areas belong to him
01:45
so all he’s doing is kind of
01:47
reestablishing control of things that
01:49
are already his so that’s what turkey’s
01:52
been doing for a long time it’s what
01:53
we’ve been talking about for a very long
01:55
time
01:56
and we just laid it all out in great
01:58
detail now here what we’ve seen is that
02:00
France and Germany have also finally
02:03
taken note and Turkey is very aggressive
02:07
in France and in Turkey use excuse me in
02:10
France in Germany using the Muslim
02:13
Brotherhood to establish footholds and
02:15
begin to take control because he used
02:17
those areas as something that should be
02:19
under his control as well and so France
02:23
and German have woken up publicly to
02:25
this there are politicians that see this
02:27
have clearly recognized the dangers and
02:30
the problems of this sort of behavior
02:31
coming out of Turkey and now for the
02:34
first time the head the French one is
02:37
the big one it’s been talked about by
02:38
various politicians in Germany but now
02:41
in France it’s the Minister of Defence
02:43
in France that’s saying that they need
02:46
to take a look at Turkey as a NATO
02:49
member andreoz dress this and it might
02:51
be appropriate to kick them out of NATO
02:53
now if this were to go forward which by
02:56
the way let me say I’ve also repeatedly
02:58
called for that and this needs to be
03:00
addressed and a serious look taken at
03:03
whether it is appropriate to have Turkey
03:06
under the present circumstances be a
03:08
member of NATO if they are thrown out
03:10
this is a big deal I mean it’s going to
03:12
cheap cause a lot of changes in the
03:15
dynamics of that area which is why you
03:17
see a lot of people resist the thought
03:20
of doing it but at some point the
03:22
balance tips to where we’re getting more
03:25
negative out of Turkey than we are
03:27
positive out of Turkey and I think that
03:29
tipping point was passed quite some time
03:31
ago and what this resistance to actually
03:35
taking kind of a zero-sum based look at
03:38
the situation with Turkey it’s actually
03:41
starting to be a problem now of course
03:43
the people that resist consider
03:44
themselves grand intellects on this and
03:46
point out all the positives of how white
03:48
turkey is important and not suggesting
03:50
those things are not true but I want to
03:52
clear lis stating is most of those
03:55
people ignore the other half of the
03:57
equation and that’s an enormous mistake
03:59
and he goes or whatever it is that’s
04:01
making people
04:01
those need to be set aside and we have
04:03
to take a look at this and decide what’s
04:05
best for the United States of America
04:06
and peace in the world and it does not
04:09
appear that having Turkey in NATO is a
04:12
positive net contribution to that so
04:15
this is a big step
04:18
turkeys essentially you know at ignoring
04:21
it and you know hoping it’ll go away
04:23
which quite frankly the way things go I
04:25
wouldn’t be surprised if it is
04:27
essentially ignored because the Pentagon
04:29
you know for whatever reason seems to be
04:32
firmly you know connected to Turkey and
04:36
unwilling to kind of look at the
04:37
situation overall and make a call and
04:40
they seem to be bringing along the
04:42
administration as well so there’s
04:43
there’s resistance to that and of course
04:46
the intelligence community you know
04:49
doesn’t doesn’t have the wherewithal
04:50
anymore to sit down and make calls like
04:52
this and recommendations they’re just
04:54
unwilling to even talk about the
04:56
situations of that nature so all of the
04:58
main players that would normally be able
04:59
to call for that here in the United
05:01
States are unwilling to do so so that’s
05:03
a problem but if this is led by the
05:06
other NATO members and if you have
05:07
France and Germany both calling to throw
05:11
turkey out of NATO and that’s that might
05:14
be impetus and if they can gain some
05:16
other votes which they could if they
05:18
made up their mind to do so it might
05:20
force the United States to follow along
05:22
in this effort so I am you’re cautiously
05:26
optimistic that this will at least be
05:28
discussed and now one thing let me make
05:30
one more thing clear I’m not saying that
05:33
the decision should be made to throw
05:34
turkey out what I’m saying is that needs
05:37
to be discussed and considered as an
05:38
option that’s also something that would
05:40
be laid out under the table with turkey
05:42
where you say Turkey you keep all this
05:44
stuff up and you’re gone brother if you
05:46
stop that then you’re it you’re gonna
05:48
stay in and then you you put the ball in
05:51
Turkey’s Court and let them decide just
05:53
how aggressive they want to be on the
05:54
world stage
05:55
for this new out of an empire or not
05:57
that would actually be my suggestion but
05:59
that cannot take place until we have
06:01
honest discussion and honest analysis of
06:04
just how seriously wrong the situation
06:07
has gone with Turkey
06:11
you know I always assume that the reason
06:14
turkey has been even in there even for
06:16
the last 10 years or so was was based on
06:19
that old saw keep your friends close but
06:22
your enemies closer
06:23
but to be honest with you I’m not sure
06:25
where that actual strategy has ever
06:28
worked for anything other than make it
06:31
easy for your enemies to stick a knife
06:33
in you yeah well unless you keep keeping
06:35
them close to wipe them out you know
06:36
militarily or politically or something
06:38
is if that’s why you’re keeping them
06:40
close then yeah and that can work but
06:42
yeah just keeping them closed to have
06:43
them close yeah I agree with you it’s
06:45
kind of a failed policy
06:54
you
06:56
[Music]
07:11
you
