Americans for Intelligence Reform

Brad Johnson, President, and retired CIA Senior Officer and Chief of Staff. Insight into current events from an intelligence angle.

New Zealand damage to 5 Eyes

As New Zealand shifts quickly to the left, their loyalty to the mission of the 5 Eyes intelligence agreement is now questionable. Brad Johnson, former Senior CIA Operative and President of Americans for Intelligence Reform, explains why 5 Eyes isn’t viable – at least in the short term. (5 Eyes includes the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.)

Brad Johnson it is July 2 of 2020 and I
00:04
understand there’s been some changes in
00:06
policy in the way that the New Zealand
00:08
government does things which you know
00:10
I’m gonna guess not knowing what you’re
00:12
gonna say is going to be pointing the
00:15
direction that all New Zealand changes
00:17
are which is a toward Islam and toward
00:20
socialism communism and moving away from
00:23
anything like Western liberal democracy
00:25
and self-rule so what is the story there
00:28
yes New Zealand
00:32
what’s interesting out of this is as you
00:34
point out New Zealand has been shifting
00:36
particularly since the 90s
00:38
more to the left and so the government
00:40
that’s installed there now is far more
00:42
leftist than it was back in those days
00:45
in the 90s so what they’ve done now is
00:48
leaked some information it’s kind of
00:49
interesting and what they’re saying is
00:52
that under pressure from the UK England
00:56
and the United States the mi6 and CIA
01:00
respectively that they were put under a
01:02
lot of pressure from the New Zealand
01:04
intelligence service to do what we term
01:08
I mean the determining intelligence
01:10
report they did is a surreptitious entry
01:12
and well they’re saying is that they
01:15
broke into three other embassies were
01:17
mentioned and this is back in the 80s
01:20
through maybe getting close to 2000 or
01:24
so right in the early 2000s and the
01:26
embassies that they mentioned were
01:27
Czechoslovakia so this is back you know
01:30
that before the you know I think it was
01:33
right after the breakup of the Soviet
01:34
Union or right at that time where they
01:38
were going back in to take a look at
01:39
what then Czechoslovakia was doing they
01:42
were they went into the Indian embassy
01:44
to get code materials to photograph it
01:47
so that they could decipher
01:48
communications that were going on in
01:50
place listening devices inside and Iran
01:55
I believe was the third country that
01:56
they that they named don’t homing to
01:59
that one but if memory serves it was
02:01
Iran that was the third one and so what
02:05
they’re doing now with this leak is sort
02:07
of condemning past things and warning
02:09
these some of these people on the left
02:11
which with them they’re more friendly
02:12
now and are
02:13
to disparage the former more
02:15
Conservative government’s that were in
02:18
power or in New Zealand prior to that
02:20
now number of problems with this the
02:22
information is old enough that let’s
02:25
take for example the one the most
02:27
details were provided on the break-in to
02:29
the Indian Embassy where they would have
02:31
got encode material and place listening
02:34
devices most of that would be you know
02:37
out of date now and these codes change
02:40
over time and things like that so it’s
02:42
it’s probably not useful so not not
02:43
doing a lot of harm at this point one of
02:47
the other interesting factors out of all
02:49
of this and perhaps one of the reasons
02:51
that they’re coming out of this is that
02:54
let’s not forget that the head of the
02:56
Canadian intelligence service within the
02:59
real mountain The Canadian Mounted
03:03
Police it’s the intelligence agents
03:04
agency resides within the Mounted Police
03:08
but the guy that was the head of that
03:10
was arrested for spying for the Cheney’s
03:12
and that was over a long period of time
03:14
so all of this information would have
03:17
already been out and leaked through him
03:18
because he would have been aware of
03:20
these things because this was something
03:22
done by the five eyes organization of
03:25
which Canada United States New Zealand
03:27
Australia and the UK are all part so
03:29
this would have been shared among them
03:31
so the Chinese would have already been
03:33
aware with it not not that they would
03:34
have shared it with the Indians because
03:35
they’re not they’re not very friendly
03:37
with them but certainly they would have
03:38
shared it with the Iranians and the
03:40
Czechoslovakia thing I mean that
03:42
governments long gone so not there but
03:44
if there was anything of significance
03:46
about this it was already leaked at
03:49
least to the Chinese so was I think the
03:52
most significant out of it is kind of
03:54
what you pointed out to begin with which
03:55
it shows how far New Zealand has gone I
03:58
think overall one of the things that we
04:00
have to consider at this point my fear
04:02
out of seeing something like this
04:04
precise report is what this means to the
04:07
overall structure of five eyes five ice
04:10
was something that for a long time was
04:12
significant and capable and was sort of
04:15
a mini you know international
04:18
Intelligence Agency you know that they
04:21
were it wasn’t a hundred percent
04:23
cooperation on everything but it’s very
04:24
good cooperation on a lot of stuff
04:26
and I think now with Canada having been
04:29
you know pretty much you know working
04:32
against five eyes through its spy and
04:37
this is not the first problem Canada’s
04:39
had ken has had a series of problems
04:40
with their participation in five eyes
04:43
and certainly the current Prime Minister
04:46
Trudeau is not a big fan of these sorts
04:48
of things because he’s essentially very
04:50
leftist and not you know more
04:52
he’s more pro China than he is pro u.s.
04:54
so this isn’t really something that
04:56
would appeal to him and now with New
04:59
Zealand having gone kind of that way
05:01
enough to the laughs that they’re
05:02
starting to blow the old secrets and
05:04
stuff you have New Zealand and Kent and
05:08
at the very least that their reliability
05:10
has to be questioned and so Australia
05:14
different they recognize a lot of the
05:15
problems there’s political strife there
05:17
too but Australia recognizes the
05:20
problems of China more readily than say
05:22
Canada and New Zealand apparently and UK
05:25
has got its own problems so they’re kind
05:28
of stressed as a partner in this
05:30
although they they’re more positive so
05:33
you know is it is just something boiling
05:35
down to the US and Australia okay maybe
05:37
I I don’t know but my fear out of all of
05:40
this like I said the bottom line fear
05:41
out of all of this is that a the utility
05:44
of five eyes is so badly damaged that it
05:47
probably won’t recover in and you know
05:49
and in the short term even the medium
05:51
turn and maybe it’s damaged so badly
05:54
that it’s just going to slowly fading
05:57
away and no longer be a viable
06:00
organization or a viable cooperation
06:02
among those five countries so that’s my
06:04
worry out of it and and there’s a lot of
06:06
things starting to add up that make me
06:07
really question just how viable five
06:09
eyes will be in the at least a short
06:12
term thank you very much Brad Johnson I
06:16
think that Canada could still be
06:17
considered reliable just in the opposite
06:20
way that it was reliable for who then
06:24
yeah
06:33
you
07:01

07:11
