Americans for Intelligence Reform

Brad Johnson, President, and retired CIA Senior Officer and Chief of Staff. Insight into current events from an intelligence angle.

India bought winterized weaponry. China’s stuck with summer-weight.

Score one for India. While the West focuses on West problems, China is up to no good at the Indian border. But India knows winter is coming in that mountainous area and has stocked up on Russian tanks built to traverse the worst Siberia has to offer. Will they get to use them? Brad Johnson says we shall see.

Brad retired from the CIA as Chief of Station after 25 years and now devotes his life to his non-profit Americans for Intelligence Reform. He brings his unique analytical abilities formed during a lifetime of on-the-ground experience. Along with other team AIR members, we bring you in-depth news you just won’t get from the mainstream media.

00:03
you know there’s one thing that the
00:04
indians do really well it’s jingoism
00:07
and i’ve been watching indian news
00:09
reports
00:10
and they’ve really they have a color
00:12
commentator it’s like watching the super
00:14
bowl
00:14
but one certainly does get even once you
00:17
filter out that kind of
00:18
the hyperbole and the jingoism and
00:20
indian news reports
00:21
you really do get the sense that there
00:23
is a serious military buildup between
00:26
china and india
00:26
you also get the sense that uh the
00:29
chinese aren’t being very s
00:32
honest with what they’re saying versus
00:35
what they’re doing
00:36
on these borders especially in the sort
00:38
of tibetan territory
00:40
what can you tell us about that please
00:44
well i can 100 confirm to anyone who’s
00:46
interested ladies and gentlemen boys and
00:48
girls of chinese are absolutely liars
00:50
so they’ll you know if they’re talking
00:52
they’re lying you can pretty much count
00:53
on that
00:54
so yeah i would distrust anything that
00:56
comes out of china uh
00:58
you know there’s a chance some kernel of
01:00
it is true but generally speaking
01:01
they’re only interested in producing
01:02
propaganda
01:03
and so they’ll they will take one little
01:05
piece of good news
01:06
and spin off a whole alternate universe
01:09
of of propaganda trying to make
01:11
themselves look good so that’s china
01:13
uh now what’s been going on is kind of
01:15
an interesting development
01:16
in the scheme of things with all of the
01:18
other things that are absorbing so much
01:20
news and attention from the west uh
01:23
presidential election here in the united
01:24
states which is coming up in what
01:26
two weeks and or three weeks
01:29
and uh uh you know the fighting in
01:32
the nagorno-karabakh region with turkey
01:34
and russia and armenia
01:36
and uh azerbaijan with that backdrop
01:40
uh china is kind of quietly up to no
01:43
good just trying to further their
01:44
own interests something that’s widely
01:47
recognized by the people close to china
01:49
by the other countries close to china
01:51
and specifically i’m talking about india
01:53
in this case and up in that border
01:55
area that’s where there’s been fighting
01:57
going on
01:58
uh smaller scale fighting between
02:00
chinese and indian troops
02:03
the um indians have moved
02:06
a large number of tanks and other
02:09
equipment trucks
02:11
into that area and have also bought some
02:14
uh far more sophisticated uh drones
02:18
and they spent 600 million on on buying
02:20
some some
02:21
very sophisticated drones so they’ve
02:24
moved up a real force into that area
02:27
up near the chinese border so now of
02:29
course it could be defensive it could be
02:31
offensive
02:32
generally speaking tanks are considered
02:34
to be an
02:35
offensive weapon more than a defensive
02:38
weapon
02:38
but certainly you know they’re used in
02:41
every way you can think of
02:42
all the time but one of the interesting
02:46
aspects out of this and this has been
02:47
touched on a little bit
02:49
is that india has an advantage over
02:51
china in the sense that
02:53
their tanks and trucks and equipment of
02:56
that nature
02:57
they buy from russia now why would that
03:01
be an advantage well this is a
03:02
mountainous area don’t forget so very
03:04
cold
03:05
desolate uh places something that
03:09
neither china nor india has tremendous
03:11
expertise on
03:12
winterizing equipment is a big deal now
03:15
who does have expertise on that
03:17
and who’s really good at it russia and
03:20
so where is it where does india get this
03:22
stuff
03:22
russia so having winterized prepared
03:26
troops vehicles equipment
03:29
drones you know air support to back it
03:31
up in this desolate difficult region
03:33
uh advanta the advantage now suddenly
03:35
goes to
03:36
india i mentioned it only because if you
03:39
wanted to
03:40
have india take it back to china because
03:43
china’s been the aggressor had been
03:45
coming over the border and doing things
03:47
and running into indian troops and
03:48
attacking them claiming this territory
03:50
and so on
03:51
if you wanted a counter-offensive this
03:54
might be an excellent way to do it
03:56
because the chinese are ill-prepared for
03:58
winter fighting
04:00
not that the indians are great experts
04:02
at it but with their equipment they
04:04
would have a huge advantage
04:06
and uh and like i said the russians they
04:08
know they know how to fight in those
04:09
cold winters in siberia and
04:11
running the equipment around and all of
04:12
that stuff they’ve learned all those
04:13
tricks so
04:14
uh i think this is something where they
04:16
would have a significant advantage
04:18
and if they desire to do so could go
04:20
across the border and be
04:21
very effective against chinese is it
04:24
something that
04:25
my thoughts on it are you know no proof
04:28
who knows what’s in their mind
04:29
but my thoughts on it are it’s it’s a
04:32
stick that they’re holding out
04:33
they now have the option over the winter
04:35
of going into china
04:37
they wouldn’t go very far it would be
04:38
just a little regional thing to kind of
04:40
kick them in the butt and let them know
04:42
that they can get their butts kicked and
04:44
uh
04:44
and then back back off to the border or
04:46
something like that and see what happens
04:47
that’s been the nature of the fighting
04:49
there that’s what the chinese have done
04:50
to the indians
04:51
so now the indians are in a position to
04:53
do it to the chinese will they you know
04:55
i don’t know
04:56
but at least i think from their
04:57
perspective they now have that option
04:59
will they need it yeah we’ll see as the
05:02
russians would say
05:04
we’ll see
05:19
[Music]
05:23
you
