How do we best honor the victims of 9/11? Not sentimentally, Brad Johnson says, but by preventing another attack. Have we stopped the threat? Or are we too busy playing politics with our national security? Bringing his 25 years as a senior CIA Operative and Station Chief, he is now retired and devotes his life to Americans for Intelligence Reform.

at johnson it is september 11th of 2020
00:03
the 19th anniversary of a catastrophic
00:08
failure i think in maybe certain systems
00:10
in the united states and a major
00:12
major attack and uh you know we’ve all
00:15
got lots to say about it but i’d like to
00:17
hear what you what you do
00:20
yes i have there’s a couple observations
00:21
i’ve been i’ve been watching the news i
00:23
i have been following today kind of what
00:25
the different news programs and stations
00:27
have done and
00:28
and you do see people sort of try to
00:31
spin it off their direction for politics
00:33
and that sort of thing which is
00:34
you know unfortunate on 9 11 and you
00:36
hear like joe biden said they
00:38
suspended all their ads for today out of
00:40
respect and you hear it you
00:42
see a lot of that sort of thing go on
00:44
and people remembering the different
00:46
things and all of that which
00:49
uh you know i’m not a type of guy that’s
00:52
i’m not
00:52
big on symbolism let’s just put it that
00:54
way so i find most of what’s going on to
00:56
be
00:57
you know uh useless i’ll put it that way
01:01
remembering the people that were killed
01:02
is great but you know how do you honor
01:04
their memory and by you know telling
01:06
sob stories about the losses of family
01:08
and how what a tragedy it was
01:11
all that stuff is fine and dandy but i i
01:13
for me that’s not the
01:14
the way you respect their their memory
01:16
and the losses that were taking place
01:18
the way you do that
01:19
win the war is what you do yeah exactly
01:22
right is go make sure that those guys
01:24
who did that on 9 11
01:27
cease to exist you wipe them off the
01:29
face of the earth
01:30
and uh make sure that they’re not able
01:33
ever able to do it again
01:34
so instead of doing something where we
01:36
reflect
01:37
on what we’ve done right over the last
01:40
19 years and what we’ve done wrong
01:41
over the last 19 years is not mentioned
01:44
by anybody so most of what’s out there
01:45
you know forgive me i don’t mean to be
01:46
insensitive to those families
01:48
that lost somebody it’s all crap and
01:50
what we need to be doing is is
01:52
something i i complain about a lot and
01:54
that is one we should be looking at the
01:56
911 commission because basically
01:58
everything that we did
01:59
came out of that 911 commission which i
02:01
i remind everybody
02:03
the 911 commission was made up of a
02:05
bunch of academics lawyers
02:06
and politicians and what did they come
02:09
up with they came up with a big
02:10
huge stinky pile of bureaucracy
02:14
and they created the dni the director of
02:17
national intelligence position
02:19
and his office that was supposed to
02:21
coordinate and streamline
02:22
and what’s happened with that thing that
02:24
went from from this new director of
02:26
national intelligence and
02:28
you know a dozen people around him to
02:30
then suddenly hundreds of people and now
02:32
thousands of people and you know we’re
02:34
we were closing in on tens of thousands
02:37
of people in this new office what it did
02:38
was create this
02:40
horrible new brand new layer of
02:42
bureaucracy
02:44
that’s what we got out of the 911
02:45
commission what did anybody ever think
02:48
anything else was going to come out of
02:49
it because if they did they don’t
02:51
understand government and they don’t
02:52
understand bureaucracy
02:54
bureaucracy begets bureaucracy and
02:57
nothing more and the creation of dhs
03:01
department of homeland security nothing
03:03
no complaint about those guys per se but
03:06
what has department of homeland security
03:08
done to improve the situation what works
03:10
so much better now
03:12
that was terrible then you know the way
03:15
it was organized before
03:16
and moving departments around between
03:18
treasury and doj
03:20
and the different things that have gone
03:21
on like that i mean
03:23
there’s nothing out of any of that
03:25
that’s that’s overall
03:27
useful in the fight against it have we
03:29
destroyed them since then no
03:31
and the problem is is what what
03:34
bureaucracy
03:34
is and you had uh george bush who is
03:37
junior
03:38
you know son who not a junior the son
03:40
who was
03:41
who was president at the time which you
03:43
know
03:44
he did okay but what he’s he is a
03:47
bureaucrat
03:48
and and took that bureaucratic
03:49
perspective put bureaucrats in charge of
03:52
a 911 commission and what we got was
03:54
bureaucracy from bureaucrats we should
03:56
be reflecting on what we needed to have
03:58
done at that time and we should have
04:00
people that have actually
04:01
fought in those arenas the operational
04:03
cadre and i always talk about this but
04:06
and i do want to
04:07
clarify by operational cadre i mean
04:09
people like myself from the cia
04:11
perspective
04:12
who spent the time in the field working
04:14
counter terrorist
04:16
operations because those are the guys
04:18
with the boots on the ground
04:20
and i say the same thing out of law
04:22
enforcement there are
04:23
fbi and a lot of other federal law
04:25
enforcement people
04:27
who have been overseas or domestically
04:30
fighting against terrorism the guys with
04:33
the boots on the ground
04:34
and military most especially them you
04:37
know there are a lot of guys
04:39
the the special forces units in
04:41
particular
04:42
but a lot of other people as well who
04:44
have supported
04:45
counter-terrorist operations and were
04:47
the boots on the ground guys
04:49
those are the people that should have
04:50
made up the 911 commission
04:52
and those are the people that we should
04:54
have on tv all day
04:56
on all the networks talking about what’s
04:58
been right and what’s been wrong what
05:00
could have been done different
05:01
and what needs to be changed now and
05:03
that is what in my opinion
05:05
would honor the memories of those people
05:08
who were lost
05:09
and and helped those people who lost
05:11
family members knowing that we’re
05:12
actually
05:13
freaking doing something instead of just
05:15
reflecting
05:16
philosophically on all this stuff and
05:18
who’s on tv
05:19
the people that are on tv are all the
05:20
reporters all the reporters talking
05:22
about oh i you know
05:23
was here this day and reported on it and
05:25
you know so what
05:26
i don’t care where you were it you know
05:29
that’s great for
05:30
for a topic of conversation over drinks
05:32
at the bar with your buds
05:33
but that’s not what should be on
05:34
national tv in this day and age
05:36
and let me just say isis and al qaeda
05:39
are
05:40
not gone the number two guy under osama
05:43
bin laden and osama bin laden was in
05:45
many ways
05:46
a figurehead the man that actually ran
05:49
out
05:50
was i’m an al zahiri he is still there
05:53
he’s still running the show and that has
05:56
not changed and a lot of the things he’s
05:57
pumping out
05:59
uh into the public arena for these you
06:01
know minions of theirs to follow
06:03
are still out there still taking place
06:06
and let me just
06:07
use as an example something that’s a a
06:09
hot topic no play on words intended
06:11
but a hot topic right now and that’s
06:13
those fires out in california and oregon
06:16
something that they’ve published and
06:17
something we’ve talked about previously
06:19
in these interviews
06:20
al qaeda and isis both over the last
06:24
year and a half or two years and as i
06:26
something we’ve
06:27
talked about in previous interviews over
06:28
the last year and a half or two years
06:30
pump out these magazines that say
06:32
different ways to go
06:34
attack the united states and the west
06:36
one of them that they’ve been talking
06:37
about for the last
06:39
at least two years is to use fires
06:42
go set fires during periods where it’s
06:44
vulnerable it’s dry that
06:46
fires can be effective into summer dry
06:48
period and suddenly we have all these
06:50
fires
06:51
well i i i’m not saying this is
06:54
terrorism it’s not conclusive
06:56
but this is the type of thing at train
06:58
derailments those
06:59
these are the types of things they train
07:01
people to go do all the time
07:02
to try and just constantly attack the
07:04
economy in the united states and wear it
07:06
down
07:06
and how many resources are being
07:08
expended out in oregon and california to
07:10
fight these fires
07:12
huge amounts of personnel money
07:15
equipment and many of these things are
07:17
being used up and destroyed it’ll all
07:18
have to be replaced
07:19
it’s an enormous drain and something
07:21
like
07:22
10 of the people are affected and have
07:24
to leave their homes and just
07:26
where these fires are active it’s it’s
07:28
it’s an it’s an enormous problem
07:30
now if it had been a terrorist attack it
07:32
was well conceived
07:33
they did it just right because look at
07:35
the problems it’s causing
07:36
the origins the fire departments will
07:39
figure all of this out in forestry they
07:41
know how to
07:42
track this back and see where it got
07:43
started and they’ll know if it
07:45
looks like it was on purpose or an
07:46
accident they’ll figure those things out
07:48
but these are the types of things that
07:50
could easily still be going on
07:52
that’s just one example of the types of
07:54
things that can be going on
07:55
and yet nobody’s talking about any of
07:57
this on 9 11. i find this a
07:59
an insult and a tragedy that instead of
08:02
doing what would actually
08:03
uh really truly honor the memory of
08:05
those that we lost
08:07
we’re we’re sitting around and
08:08
reminiscing i can you know
08:12
a bunch of useless bureaucrats and
08:14
that’s what we see out of the news media
08:16
that’s what we see our politicians
08:17
that’s what we see out of everybody
08:19
and where are those individuals standing
08:20
up like this
08:22
talking about what should be done and
08:23
what should be discussed and the type of
08:25
things that can be done to fix this
08:27
we have this intelligence community
08:29
that’s deeply political
08:31
highly politicized and weaponized very
08:34
active in our
08:35
presidential campaigns but what are they
08:37
doing to make sure those
08:39
those terrorist groups are wiped from
08:40
the face of the earth and
08:42
i would say damn little if you looked at
08:44
the last as
08:45
again something i mentioned the last
08:47
report that came out
08:48
every presidential election we get a
08:50
four-year report from the intelligence
08:52
community telling us what we need to
08:54
look at
08:54
and their big topics were globalization
08:57
and global warming
08:58
terrorism was a lesser topic it’s not
09:01
that much of interest right now
09:02
but those groups are not gone they’re
09:05
not
09:06
dead yes they’ve had setbacks president
09:08
trump has done a
09:09
great job taking away territory for them
09:12
but we still haven’t taken away
09:14
all of their powers and they’re still
09:16
out actively recruiting
09:18
look for people to go commit acts of uh
09:21
of
09:22
of murder on the streets or uh sabotaged
09:25
by starting fires and doing all of these
09:27
things
09:28
and you know those things are going on
09:30
actually
09:32
there may have been two attacks today
09:33
they haven’t said who did it
09:35
but there was an axe knife attack in the
09:38
jewelry district of a
09:39
big british city and there was a strange
09:42
of the truck
09:43
that deliberately ran into as many cars
09:45
as it could on the california highway
09:47
so it’s not like these things those are
09:49
precise examples and that’s what they’ve
09:51
done is they’ve gone horizontal
09:53
they’re they’re reaching out doing lots
09:54
of little attacks so these are the
09:56
things like i say
09:57
it’s a slow drip of things that they’re
09:59
trying to do all the time
10:00
to damage overall the economy and
10:04
uh and and do what terrorism is supposed
10:06
to do and that’s make us afraid
10:08
so these are the types of things that
10:10
are still going on
10:11
and where is the outrage where is the
10:13
pushback where are people standing up
10:15
and calling out these politicians
10:17
had ladies and gentlemen i’d say you got
10:19
one place that’s right here
10:20
where’s everybody else brad i i gotta
10:22
say for
10:24
for this entire 19-year period i have
10:26
quietly thought to myself
10:28
that grieving and mourning and
10:31
commemoration
10:32
is a luxury that’s afforded to the
10:34
winner and somehow
10:36
it’s been weaponized against us so that
10:38
we will do this thing
10:40
and create the illusion amongst
10:41
ourselves that we’re in control
10:45
yeah and i’ve not seen like i said i’ve
10:47
been kind of following the different
10:49
networks and seeing who’s reporting on
10:51
what
10:51
and it’s all this philosophical morning
10:54
type of nonsense that’s out there
10:56
like i said i do not mean to insult
10:58
those people that lost family members at
11:00
that period of time
11:01
but where’s the show with all the guys
11:03
the old ops
11:04
guys boots on the ground from law
11:06
enforcement from military from
11:07
intelligence
11:08
who’ve actually fought in this arena
11:10
know the truth of the matter
11:12
and are out there saying look this is
11:13
what we should be doing and haven’t been
11:15
doing
11:15
this is where we’re failing this is how
11:17
we fix it this is how we honor our dead
11:19
by going out and kicking their ass and
11:21
this is the path to that ass kicking
11:22
that they deserve
11:24
where is that i i have not seen hiding
11:27
her hair of a single program on
11:29
any network radio or anything else that
11:32
has covered the topic in that manner
11:33
you got to ask yourself why why and i
11:37
think you
11:38
touched on that precise thing and that
11:39
is we’ve been marginalized we
11:41
marginalize ourselves
11:43
that we we we just sit back in our
11:46
chairs and
11:46
you know put our thumbs where they don’t
11:48
belong and get philosophical about the
11:51
issue
11:51
rather than getting up out of our chair
11:52
and going out and finding the problem
11:54
taken care of
11:55
thanks very much for saying being for
11:56
saying that out loud it’s so needed to
11:58
be said thanks brad
