Americans for Intelligence Reform

Brad Johnson, President, and retired CIA Senior Officer and Chief of Staff. Insight into current events from an intelligence angle.

US media ignores Russia, Iran, and China teaming up in Indian Ocean. World alarmed

Brad Johnson

Voice of America aired an analysis of the escalating arms race over trade routes in various seas to establish control over trade routes. What’s unusual is that China, Russia, and Iran are working together conducting naval exercises. There is global concern this may turn into offensive attacks, but the media ignores it in the U.S. Why?

00:01
brad johnson here americans for
00:02
intelligence reform intelreform.org it
00:05
is
00:05
17 february 2021 and
00:08
a very interesting development that
00:10
oddly enough is is being
00:12
reported by voice of america voa but
00:14
getting very little press coverage
00:16
anywhere else
00:17
but that is significant and important
00:19
the russians
00:20
and the iranians are currently doing
00:24
uh joint navy exercises in the indian
00:27
ocean and this is an important area
00:29
out there not far from these areas where
00:31
china is pushing so hard to
00:34
uh take control over trade routes and
00:36
all of that by controlling the
00:38
south china sea and what we’re seeing
00:41
here is a very interesting thing now
00:43
russia and iran
00:45
they they’re again i i describe these
00:47
guys as kind of frenemies i mean they
00:49
have their areas of cooperation
00:51
and they have their areas of competition
00:53
and this is one of those areas where
00:55
while they both don’t you know it’s it
00:58
would be rare to have some sort of navy
01:02
conflict where the two of them are
01:04
natural allies
01:05
but yet it is in both their interest to
01:08
be holding these
01:08
naval exercises now there was there was
01:11
these happened in the past and by the
01:13
way
01:14
iran says if these are done uh
01:17
to enhance security of maritime
01:20
trade i think that’s fine and to be
01:24
share information and counter terrorism
01:26
and all those sorts of things so what
01:27
just very briefly what that means of
01:29
course is by
01:31
by enhancing the security of trade
01:33
meaning that they control the trade in
01:34
that area
01:36
and to be ant counterterrorism for the
01:37
iranians counterterrorism means anti-us
01:40
so that’s what they’re what they’re
01:42
saying russia is now part of this
01:44
russia you know is kind of 80
01:47
enemy in the united states and 20
01:49
overlap of interest it’s a pity because
01:51
actually there’s probably a lot that
01:53
could be done
01:54
jointly where there’s a lot of
01:56
friendship
01:58
of basis for friendship between the two
02:00
countries it’s just something that’s
02:02
because of the past not going to happen
02:04
anytime soon
02:06
so taking place with this in in 2019
02:11
version of this uh joint exercise these
02:14
navy exercises
02:15
was china very interesting iran china
02:18
and russia doing these joint exercises
02:21
and as we know
02:22
china is very interested in controlling
02:24
the seas the oceans
02:26
for to control the the new silk road in
02:29
essence
02:31
they’re not openly involved with this
02:33
although iran has been for long
02:35
time trying to create a better
02:38
relationship there to offset
02:39
the united states this time around india
02:43
is involved now for india and china to
02:45
do joint exercises together would just
02:47
be non-starter
02:48
they’d probably actually start shooting
02:50
each other because they are having
02:51
shooting wars shooting
02:53
battles not a war uh on the on some of
02:55
these border these these
02:57
himalaya type mountain range regions
03:00
that where there’s there’s uh
03:02
disagreement over precisely where that
03:04
border is between the two countries
03:06
they’ve been shooting and killing each
03:07
other and they’re in
03:10
relatively small numbers where you know
03:11
say a dozen or so people are
03:13
either who hurt or wounded or killed in
03:16
in the fighting that sort of thing
03:18
and india has just bought a whole bunch
03:20
more tanks from russia
03:22
uh to you know to create a stronger land
03:25
army in case this uh this should erupt
03:28
into a larger battle with
03:29
china so they’re not involved but this
03:32
is very interesting that
03:33
india now is trying to get involved in
03:35
that navy
03:37
uh exercises to develop experience and
03:40
and uh and their power in that uh area
03:44
of
03:44
of interest to them off the indian coast
03:48
uh this is something i’ve been pointing
03:50
out for a long time
03:52
the navy the south china sea
03:55
driven by china is creating an arms race
03:59
for navies in in the world it’s one
04:02
where the united states
04:04
hasn’t really participated
04:08
i would say we’re kind of not looking at
04:11
this for the problem that it really is
04:13
but just recently in the last year or
04:15
two
04:16
china has put as has built and put out
04:19
to see
04:20
three aircraft carriers also they’re
04:22
building a submarine fleet and the first
04:24
submarine
04:25
modern submarine has uh either just
04:28
about to be launched or been launched
04:30
and if you look at submarines and
04:31
aircraft carriers what are they built
04:33
for i mean this is not some defensive
04:35
thing you put around your
04:36
your your continent or home base or
04:40
something
04:40
these are offensive weapons and if you
04:43
look at world war ii
04:44
the the submarine can be a very
04:46
effective offensive weapon
04:48
so they’re building an offensive fleet
04:51
that can
04:51
attack places and we all know that
04:53
taiwan is very high on their list
04:55
first chance they get chinese going in
04:57
so we’re seeing this
04:58
arms race begin to develop particularly
05:02
in the pacific
05:03
which again if you look at world war ii
05:05
this this is an
05:06
important area and important to have a
05:08
dominating navy in that area
05:10
where you see the normal the western
05:12
powers for example
05:14
great britain that traditionally was a
05:15
naval power the united states
05:18
they’re just not building they’re kind
05:20
of content with what they have which the
05:22
united states in particular still has a
05:24
very important navy
05:25
a force to be dealt with the brits
05:27
they’ve they’ve got some
05:29
navy power as well uh some of western
05:31
europe does as well so i mean it’s not a
05:34
a done deal sort of thing but this is
05:37
how this is shaping
05:38
up and that’s not even being discussed
05:39
as far as i know this has been uh has
05:41
been completely ignored as an issue
05:44
but this naval exercise that’s taking
05:46
out the place out in that area
05:48
off the coast is very important very
05:50
significant
05:51
of the recognition by the rest of the
05:53
world
05:54
that this is a problem that’s forming
05:57
and they see you know storm clouds on
05:58
the horizon
05:59
and want to be prepared so it doesn’t
06:01
mean it’s going to you know blast open
06:03
into war
06:04
but it’s one of those things that the
06:06
circumstances that have to be
06:07
in place for it to erupt into war if
06:10
someday the circumstances are right for
06:12
it to happen
06:12
the indians are all over this and they
06:15
would be a natural
06:16
ally for the united states although
06:18
they’ve long been working with um
06:20
with russia for weapons and these sorts
06:21
of agreements will russia and india
06:24
would they be somebody that could offset
06:26
china you know probably not not by
06:29
themselves or too many
06:30
individual issues between them but at
06:33
least it’s something that’s being kicked
06:34
around and looked at
06:36
so again another hot spot area to watch
06:39
and let’s hope it doesn’t uh doesn’t
06:40
erupt into violence at some point in the
06:42
near
06:42
or medium term
