Are surveillance cameras a good idea?

NYC’s mayor has installed hundreds of street corner surveillance cameras and is adding more. While catching bad drivers is fine – although a bit of a money grab, it shouldn’t be used to monitor citizens. That is what is done in China. It should never be done here. What do you think?
