Americans for Intelligence Reform

Brad Johnson, President, and retired CIA Senior Officer and Chief of Staff. Insight into current events from an intelligence angle.

Trump’s proposed executive order on school choice helps children and parents

The Black Community highly favors school choice as no options exist now – district school and you get what you get. Mega size trends now, so individual attention is virtually impossible. In Trump’s proposal, smaller and more specialized schools would be created such as STEM, special needs, gifted, sports etc. Vouchers help parents. While a winning proposal, expect pushback from teacher unions – big supporters of Democrats and their campaigns. Let’s hope the proposal goes through that especially benefits people of color.

it is June 17th and I am here with Brad
00:03
Johnson retired chief of station with
00:05
the CIA and we are going to talk about
00:08
the an executive order of President
00:12
front made concerning school choices can
00:14
you explain that please
00:16
yes it’s an interesting step by the
00:18
president he hasn’t actually given the
00:20
order but this is something that he
00:21
raised in fact this morning and we’ve
00:25
all seen the situation unfold here
00:27
particularly United States but it’s a
00:29
thing that’s gone worldwide which is
00:31
essentially the black lives matter
00:33
program and their efforts to become a
00:38
political movement based on the killing
00:41
of George Floyd and so it’s gone way way
00:45
past anything having to do with that
00:47
poor man’s demise and now it’s a
00:50
full-blown political movement and this
00:53
is the the essential game plan that’s
00:54
been laid out by the Democratic Party
00:56
this is what the left is going to do is
00:59
just going to be race issue after race
01:01
issue and it’s they’re basically waiting
01:04
for black people to get killed by
01:06
policemen and they’re they’re hoping to
01:08
keep this alive and up and running until
01:10
election and that’s what they’re going
01:11
to going to use because they really
01:14
don’t have anything else to run on so
01:15
this unrest and these protests in the
01:18
street again the the chop Chad’s inand
01:22
Seattle all of these things are all part
01:24
of this so the president made a very
01:26
interesting step today and what he
01:27
proposed was essentially school choice
01:31
now this is something that’s been
01:33
discussed in many variations and guises
01:36
for the blast number of years like
01:38
probably the last decade or so this has
01:40
been an issue perhaps more but this is
01:44
essentially dusting off the voucher
01:46
program now his Secretary of Education
01:51
Betsy DeVos I believe is his education
01:55
proposed something along these lines
01:57
very early on and the president’s first
02:00
term and it was a very half done it was
02:03
not a true voucher program it was it was
02:06
a very halfway done sort of thing that
02:08
didn’t really allow school choice now I
02:10
know if that was for thinking on it or
02:12
was or she had a very gentle approach to
02:17
it hoping that she could win bipartisan
02:19
support and actually get it through so
02:21
not sure of what her thinking was but
02:23
what the president’s proposing is actual
02:25
school choice now there’s a number of
02:28
reasons as to the timing this is a very
02:30
interesting move by the president and
02:33
the the actual school choice would mean
02:35
that the way it is the United States
02:37
from our foreign listeners is that
02:39
whatever district you live in in first
02:43
grade through twelfth grade which is
02:45
grade school middle school in high
02:47
school you go to the school that is
02:50
assigned that district so whatever
02:51
district it is that’s the one you go to
02:53
now the school system in the United
02:56
States have slowly been turning away
02:58
from smaller schools and going to mega
03:01
schools and of course there’s a lot of
03:02
pushback on that by people because you
03:07
know it’s you’re a mega school you’re a
03:08
number the kids are a number and not an
03:11
individual so that’s what a lot of
03:12
parents are very unhappy about so this
03:15
is becoming more and more of an issue
03:16
but mega schools are of course good for
03:18
the Department of Education and teachers
03:21
and stuff it makes their life easier is
03:22
easier but it’s not as good for students
03:25
because there’s no little personal
03:27
relationship with those kids so this is
03:30
something that is also a powder block
03:34
for the Democratic Party the teachers
03:36
union and teachers in general are one of
03:39
the key power blocks by Democrats so
03:41
this move on the part of the President
03:44
does two things that are very important
03:46
one it attacks that democratic power
03:49
base and two this is immensely popular
03:53
by eighty ninety percent almost
03:56
unanimous agreement among the black
03:59
population here in the United States now
04:00
it’s very popular among whites too and
04:03
this is kind of boiled down into a thing
04:05
of where it’s it’s teachers union versus
04:09
people and that’s the kind of the
04:12
position that they’ve taken us to is
04:13
they’ve gotten more and more and more
04:15
extreme and all these different programs
04:17
that they have that are dumbing down the
04:20
educational system over and over and
04:22
over so
04:23
it’s become a thing of the teachers
04:25
union versus the people and that’s what
04:27
we’re seeing unfold and this is
04:30
absolutely a real proposal by the
04:33
president United States just for the
04:35
population in general but particularly
04:37
the black population in the United
04:39
States and this is something that the
04:41
black copy of the population and us has
04:43
been pushing for for a long time but
04:45
this puts them exactly in opposition to
04:49
a very central and important Democratic
04:51
Party kind of a platform issue and that
04:54
is the teachers union because that’s
04:55
such an important block to the
04:57
Democratic Party and that lets them fund
05:00
a lot of money back into Democratic
05:02
candidates so it’s you know it
05:05
approaches money laundering the way this
05:08
is done because they’ll let government
05:09
money go into these unions and teachers
05:11
programs and things like that and then
05:13
they’ll take a portion of that money and
05:15
give it back to Democratic candidates so
05:16
it’s something that that is a separate
05:18
issue that needs to be addressed but
05:20
this is absolutely a winning proposal on
05:23
the part of the president particularly
05:24
among the black population but just also
05:26
in general and let me point out I mean
05:28
just some of the advantages I mean this
05:29
really should be a no-brainer and if it
05:32
were not for the teachers union who are
05:34
anti people now anti students at this
05:36
point if it weren’t for them this would
05:38
have been implemented long ago but for
05:40
example if you have a student that say
05:44
has a learning disability of any kind be
05:46
it reading math whatever it is if
05:48
they’re disadvantaged in some way and
05:50
need to be caught up then they’re going
05:53
to be schools that are then going to be
05:55
allowed to specialize in that and so
05:57
it’s not one size fits all they’ll be
05:59
schools so if you live in a given area
06:02
of all of these different students there
06:05
are willing to be schools that will then
06:06
start to take on these specializations
06:08
so you have a place where a student
06:11
needs particularly can go and get the
06:14
help he needs or she needs and same for
06:17
example say a gifted athletic child
06:21
there’ll be schools that will have
06:23
particularly good sports programs and so
06:25
you’ll be able to get that child into a
06:27
school that has programs that fit their
06:30
strengths and then it puts them in a
06:32
position to go on to say collegiate
06:34
competition and who knows
06:35
or whatever but there’ll be programs
06:37
that fit that child’s needs and then so
06:39
for the gifted students the students
06:41
high IQ roar just happened to be really
06:43
good at math whatever
06:44
there’s particularly going to be good
06:47
schools for those children as well
06:49
because we have such a crop I need for
06:51
math in the United States because that’s
06:53
been a problem for decades so this is a
06:55
solution to all of those things you’re
06:57
going to have schools that that then
06:59
begin to specialize and you’re going to
07:01
see a lot of students have the enchant a
07:04
chance to advance far faster and far
07:06
further than they would have ever been
07:07
and that’s why the people of the United
07:09
States are essentially for this the only
07:12
ones opposing it are political in nature
07:13
and as I say it’s boiled down to
07:15
essentially the teachers unions versus
07:19
the people and this is nowhere better
07:22
highlighted than in the black community
07:24
here in the United States so absolutely
07:26
a winning move by the president his
07:28
timing is superb and this is this is
07:31
something that’s going to play well for
07:32
the president well it sounds like a
07:34
policy that we would normally expect out
07:36
of a Democratic president I keep
07:39
thinking of the famous words of
07:41
commander Spock when he said it takes a
07:44
Nixon to go to China and I guess it
07:46
takes a Trump to solve the school
07:48
equality problem yeah you would think
07:51
that this would be something the
07:52
Democrats would want to do but endemic
07:55
people who are Democrats want to do this
07:58
I like the black community they’re
08:00
overwhelmingly Democrat but they’re
08:02
overwhelmingly in favor of free school
08:04
choice so it’s it’s one of those things
08:06
that’s going to have very wide
08:08
bipartisan support within the population
08:11
but within the Democratic Party it will
08:13
not and it will not because of just what
08:16
you would expect money it’s what makes
08:18
the world go around you want to follow
08:21
the reasoning behind why people do what
08:23
they do just follow the money and this
08:25
is a big moneymaker for the Democratic
08:26
Party
08:27
to have the Teachers Union being control
08:30
and be anti people as I said and be
08:32
against free school choice but it’s one
08:35
of those things that I hope will be
08:37
inevitable and it looks like the
08:39
president’s in a good position to to
08:40
actually move this forward
08:48
you
08:50
[Music]
09:05
you
